Is it that when one thinks about visiting websites one should also think about web scams?
Everyday more and more companies have come to terms with the fact that social marketing is something that is an essential part of the business word, but the question here is how do companies protect their target audiences that visit they online websites from scams? From the looks of things it seems as they are just not doing anything.
I mean it is so annoying when trying to buy a book at Kalahari for instance and then there is some little pop-up box that says you have won something whereas you have not won anything it is all in the name of stealing your identity information. There are tips on how to spot scams in social media and there are also on how to spot websites scams as well but is that enough.
Not everyone is exposed to the tips on how to spot scams so many of us just fall for the “congratulation you are our lucky 100.000 visitor and you won, click here to claim your price”. The number of scams on the net grows every day and people’s personal information are being stolen, so one can ask a question here and say is just creating tips on how to spot scams and not doing anything about them sufficient? Or is it that companies are too busy promoting their brands online to actually take the scams happening on their websites serious?
scary stuff hey,i just think that people must be educated on this, because we are not aware of what we click on most of the times, so people must just be careful around these things. we just need more people like you to warn us about these scams
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Daisy, i also think that we as people must just make sure that we educated on things and do not wait for someone to tell us because we might find that it is too late when we want to wait for someone to alert us.
DeleteMhmmm, at times you clever ney?
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think about the topic at hand sir? Is Anglo doing something to stop these scams on their website?
Deleteja ne, wat u are saying is very true, we find it hard sometimes to deal wit such scams, but I think is because there is no one who's in charge for the internet
ReplyDeleteYes no one is in charge of the internet but do you think just because of that people that create these scams should take advantage of that?
Deleteinteresting topic the only thing that company cares about is promoting their brands and nothing else whether the details identifyng you is protected or not to them is not important regardless of this there isnt much they can do because the cyberworld is full of hackers its not easy for companies to protect their web page users
ReplyDeleteI get your point on the fact that the cyber world is full of hackers and maybe yes it is not easy for companies to protect their web visitors but one could ask these two questions here and they can be, who says it is not easy? And another question could be have they tried and failed or they simply just want to promote themselves as a brand and nothing else?
DeleteSome companies do take the scams happening on their websites serious, for example, Shell ( owners of Shell garages around the country) ... are a global group of energy and petrochemicals companies. They have dedicated a page on their website concerning Fraud and Scams. http://www.shell.com/global/aboutshell/about-our-website/frauds-scam-alert.html They are alerting people about the fraud and scams happening on the internet. they are discussing how this scams come about; for example, they come in form of Business Propositions, Recruitment Scams and Prize awards and grants. They are notifying people on things they should not do when they come across this crimes. The company's position states "Shell’s name and identity is being used fraudulently in these instances. In as much as we sympathise with anyone who has lost money in this way, Shell Group companies cannot accept any responsibility."
ReplyDeleteIt is good that your company has taken initiative to make people aware and to also try and prevent website scam, so my question here is that yes you are doing something about it but what about other companies? , are they also doing something about it ? , I bet you will say that you don't know any information about other companies right? Correct me if I am wrong.
DeleteKhanyisa I cannot speak for all companies, my company and others are doing something about this. We are hoping the ones that are not doing anything about it will eventual join us. So we can fight this issue together, we also need help from the society. Now that we have identified a problem, we need a Solution, We need to focus on the positive aspects to progress. Let's cut out all the negativity
DeleteAt AL. NKWATSI yes your company might be doing something about it and indeed that is a good thing and I wish more companies were like yours, but that is not the case, still the are many scams on the internet and a million companies are just ignoring or still planning to do something or they are just not doing anything at all about it and as you say you cannot speak for other companies and maybe it is just your company that is doing something who know is the scams are just every where.
DeleteWow I for one did not know that when I click on links such as you are the million visitor I am actually being scammed. Interesting topic you have and it bring a question to my mind as well as to is it safe for me to visit websites or not?
ReplyDeleteTrue hey as a person you are bound to ask yourself as to is it safe to visit company websites, but I guess as people we just need to stay alerted on this things and just not click of them to avoid identification theft.
DeleteWe should not blame the companies only, it is not their responsibility solely. Their target audience need to take initiative also. People should just stop being ignorant. how can you win something where else you never entered any competition?... we as people are just stupid sometimes, how can you give a stranger your full name, date of birth, full address, username and password for online services et cetera, et cetera. A lot of companies have taken this matter serious, on the Uj website when you want to check your application statues there is that "Before you continue enter text shown above in the text box below" sentence. companies use this to stop spams which disseminating viruses and fraudulent or scam Messages.
ReplyDeleteYou say we should not blame companies only as it is not their responsibility alone, but the question is who creates this websites, who has access to change and remove information on the websites? The answer here to these questions would be the web creators and those are the companies, so I think it is their responsibility to do something to ensure that their web visitors are protected from scams.
DeleteMoney is a root of evil, when ever human beings see any thing to do with money, they come closer.THANK YOU FOR ALERTING US.
ReplyDeleteit is my pleasure but I just want to ask since you say that money is the root of all evil does it mean that even the company that you work for as a public relations intern they do not care about these scams they just also want to promote themselves?
DeleteI think this website scams are there to generate profit for such organisations , that is why some organisations does not take that seriously because they know that they are benefiting from it. As for those companies who have taken drastic measures about this issue they must continue doing the good job.
ReplyDeleteYou know what, I agree with you on the fact that maybe they are not taking initiative because maybe they are benefiting for every identification scammed and sold to other companies, but if that is the case I mean don’t we deserve to asked if we want our information to be sold to other companies? , shouldn’t we also benefit as well since it is our information sold?
DeleteI think companies or brands are just busy promoting their brands that they don't care, because if they did care they would be communicating with their users that do not fall for such; then we wouldn't be having people clicking on things they don't know about. This is indeed a cause of concern truly.
ReplyDeleteYou are right hey I mean if they are aware of things on their websites why not put it on the first page of their websites and alert us not to fall for this things.
DeleteI do not believe that not all of them are scams, I mean think about it how can I win something I have not even entered for?
ReplyDelete“There is a possibility that the companies does not see this scam you are talking about when they look at their pages” you say, I just think that they are just being ignorant that’s all it is not because they do not see or are not aware off?
ReplyDeleteThis shows that the world that we live is noclonger safe at all, we should do research before anything else just so we can be sure.
ReplyDeleteTrue hey, the world we will in is just a world unsafe, and you right we just have to double check everything that we do on the net .
Deletelol scams are irritating PERIOD. imagine as broke as I am and then booooooom "congratulations you have won a million rand" pops out on my computer screen... this people are playing with our emotions
ReplyDeleteThat’s the thing girl, they know that everyone wants to be a winner and that’s how they try and trick us.
Deletei agree with reabetwe makwela because lot of people are being defraud of their money and identity.nowadays technology is very high and with technology anything is possible.people need to understant everything before enterig it.
ReplyDeleteTrue hey, I would say get your facts straight before attempting to add your personal information anywhere.
DeleteTrue I agree Nyiko, the only way we can protect ourselves is to not put our true identities on social networks to avoid such scams.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you but truth be told, we never worry about putting all our information out there, we're all too happy to give out personal details.
DeleteTrue Keabetswe, I mean we might know or not know that we have to stay alert but most of the time when we are on the internet we never really think about being on the lookout for scams
DeleteThat is so true, It is time that Companies take responsibility hence they want to impress their customers, by doing so ,this will show that a company does not only care about their business but they also care about their customers by protecting them from these scams.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, but do you think by us just blogging and commenting about it will change anything?
DeleteI think they are too busy promoting their brands to actually care that while we visit their websites, there are actually scams on their websites.
ReplyDeleteI second that statement.
DeleteSo true...people keep hacking into our accounts telling us we have won 10 000 whereas they just want our personal details, the next thing your married, this is so wrong.
ReplyDeleteQuite an important thing you raised hey" the next thing you are marred” what then, and I bet it has happened to someone somewhere in the world.
DeletePop-ups windows really annoys, and they sometimes make your computer runs so slowly. Most of softwares viruses come from pop-ups windows.
ReplyDeleteWhich is why I think that companies should do something about them ,because they make their websites to be slow and we all know that once something takes time to load we eventually lose interest.
DeleteI have to agree with Keabetswe, companies do not care about such, just as long as they accumulate profits. Thats all that matters. Quite frankly, these silly pop-up windows annoy me hard.
ReplyDeleteThey annoy me and you both, but what happens when you really need something on that specific website, that’s when you have no choice but to be annoyed about this things and just try not fall for them.
Deletewell i know just how irritating a pop-up box can be, and i suppose organisations need to acquire services of a qualified communication lawyer, someone who is knowledgeable about executing online scams and protect the company website from such things.
ReplyDeleteI agree on the fact that you say that they need to get someone who is knowledgeable about online scams to protect their company websites from scams, but don’t you think they should get an ( IT) Information Technology expect rather than an qualified communication lawyer that you are talking about?
DeleteI knw exactly how pop ups and bannes can be irriting. I suppose organisation are aware of this and they are buzy making profit not bearing in mind they are being criminals buy lying to us telling us we won something while we ddnt. it jst piss me off
ReplyDeleteI don’t think it is this companies that put those scams. Don’t you think if they put them and say you won something and only to find that you haven’t it will reflect bad on them as a brand?
Deletewell i knew about the scam that are happening online but i never thought if you are visting MTN website and the pop up box appear on that webiste could be a scam.is best to expect to win when you entered a draw or competition.
ReplyDeleteIt is true what you are saying, it is better to expect to win when you have entered a competition, and at least now you know that when you see a pop up box you have to double check if it is legitimate.
DeleteIt's all about making stash...they don't care about anything.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you hey, but do you think us as the web visitors really do show concerns to Companies or we just do not care?
DeleteYes, T.man is right. companies do not care about our protection, they just want money. lets not fool ourselves please.Just buy the book or rather do not buy the book. Thats your choice after all.
ReplyDeletechoice or not but don't you think the owners of the web pages who are companies should do something, I mean we are their customer’s and their job is to make us happy as we bring profit form them?
DeleteAt the end of the day it is all about keeping the eye on the "stash" as Themba has said. The problem here is that as much as social media has taken over the marketing world not everyone is clued up about such things, not everyone who surfs the net knows the ins and outs of the internet nor familiar with the scams that take place there. And clearly it is not of importance to the organisations to protect their clients from such of which it really sucks.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on “not everyone who surfs the net knows the ins and outs of the internet nor familiar with the scams that take place” and it is sad that companies are just too busy promoting themselves to care.
Deleteorganisations should do something about this, maybe create a more safer websites to protect the identity of their users
ReplyDeleteYou are right hey, they should stop being promotional oriented and profit oriented and do something.
DeleteAs a customer yes you have to do something Musa which is ignore and do not fall far it, but all I am saying is that this things are annoying and we do not want to have to ignore them we just don’t want to see it at all.
DeleteOkay, but I still stand with what I said, they are just being ignorant PERIOD
ReplyDeletePoint taken sir
ReplyDeleteNow there is something to think about, I mean yes maybe some ignore it because they gain or they are not even involved with this who knows. And that is something that we will never know because they will never admit to it.
ReplyDeleteExactly
ReplyDeleteThese things are part of life and the audience need to be aware of it,nothing could be done to stop it as we all know that businesses are operating to satisfy their customers needs in a daily basis.
ReplyDeleteif you say businesses are working to satisfy their customer’s needs, then why are they not doing anything about this or this does not fall under the needs that they must protect us from?
Deleteit is irritating but then everybody has a way of getting attention from the people so i guess thats one of the way in that they grabs the internet users to their advertisements so we should not blame them as they too make a living out of it
ReplyDeleteI fail to get your point here can you please elaborate more.
DeleteOrganisations websites should have a website regulatory board that consistently checks the safety and validity of website content. Consumers should be aware that they have the choice to either participate or not in pop ups.
ReplyDeleteExactly Mpho but companies do not have such and still peoples personal identity information are stolen.
